Medical Second Opinions

Your medical second opinion evaluation occurs remotely. This means your evaluation is conducted not just by one specialist but a team of expert multi-disciplinary physicians who practice at world-leading medical centers. These centers are renowned for their medical research advancements, cutting-edge treatments and the overall quality of their clinical outcomes.

A remote medical second opinion also means that if you need specialized care in a different location, you are not limited by distance, your availability to travel, or your capacity to travel if you have mobility issues.

Our approach is simple, quick and efficient and takes up to 10 days for you to receive a full review of your diagnosis and treatment plan based on the latest clinical research without having to leave the comfort of your home. There are no out-of-pocket costs for requesting or receiving a medical second opinion.

MediGuide's Remote Medical Second Opinion Process

Members will receive the following services and benefits as part of MediGuide’s Remote Medical Second Opinion Program:

a) Within 12 business hours from a Member’s initial request for an MSO, MediGuide will send local privacy legislation compliant “release of medical records” forms to the Member.

b) When MediGuide is notified of a Member’s diagnosis with a Qualifying Medical Condition by a Physician, its researchers identify three World Leading Medical Centers that are ranked the best in the world in diagnosing and treating that particular illness and that are then available to respond to the Member’s request in a timely manner. Information regarding the three World Leading Medical Centers is sent to the Member
within 3 business days of MediGuide’s receipt of the Member’s initial request.

c) Once the Member has chosen the World Leading Medical Center that will respond to his or her request and returned to MediGuide the Member’s medical release form, MediGuide works directly with the Member’s Attending Physician to collect and assemble all relevant Medical Records for transmission to the selected World Leading Medical Center. The Member’s Attending Physician is paid for the retrieval, copying, and assembly of the Member’s Medical Records within 7 (seven) business days from the time that the records are picked up by the MediGuide-provided courier service.

d) The selected World Leading Medical Center, with coordination from MediGuide, will complete the review and analysis of the Member’s Medical Records and the resulting recommendations regarding treatment approach (the “Medical Second Opinion”) within 10 business days from receiving a complete set of the Member’s Medical Records. The MSO will also include a complete review of the original diagnosis and proposed
treatment plan by expert physicians at the selected World Leading Medical Center. All analyses and recommendations are presented to the Member and his or her Attending Physician in writing.

e) The Medical Second Opinion is transmitted to the Member and his or her Attending Physician within 12 business hours from receipt by MediGuide after completion by the selected World Leading Medical Center, but in no event beyond 10 (ten) business days
from the receipt of a complete set of the member’s Medical Records.

f) MediGuide will pay for all costs relating to the Medical Second Opinion process.
Dependent upon the Member’s stated contact method preferences, MediGuide will interact with the Member via telephone, Skype or Zoom, facsimile, email, and local postal service providers, as well as FedEx, United Parcel Service, DHL and other expedited delivery services.

Qualifying Medical Conditions

MediGuide’s Remote Medical Second Opinion Services empower Members to confirm their diagnoses and provide them with the most appropriate recommended treatment option for their specific condition.

MediGuide Members may request a Medical Second Opinion under most circumstances, with the following exceptions:

  Member has not received a diagnosis – a MediGuide Member must have been given an official diagnosis by his or her treating physician as a prerequisite in order for the WLMC’s to confirm the diagnosis and to provide treatment recommendations on a particular medical condition,

  Member has not been evaluated by a treating physician within the last 12 months – Recent medical records are required by WLMCs in order to provide MediGuide Members relevant treatment recommendations.

  Member has developed an acute, life-threatening condition – If a MediGuide Member requires immediate medical attention that Member should seek the care of their treating physician on an urgent basis, and not delay while awaiting the arrival of the MSO.

  Physical evaluation of the Member is required – certain conditions will always require an in-person study and evaluation (for example, mental illness). Understandably, such cases would not be eligible to receive a Remote Medical Second Opinion.
